Revision Management

Revision management is the practice of tracking and controlling successive versions of a document as it changes over time. Each revision represents a distinct, dated version of a document, with a clear record of what changed, who approved it, and when it became effective.

Effective revision management means users always know which version of a document is current, previous revisions remain accessible for reference or audit purposes, and future revisions can be prepared and reviewed before they go live. This is typically supported by an effectivity date, which determines when a given revision becomes the active version.

Why it matters: In regulated environments, being able to prove exactly which version of a document was in effect at a given point in time is often a compliance requirement in itself, not just good practice.
